PUPILS past and present gathered at a Wallsend school to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Denbigh Primary School in Howdon hosted a week of activities, which not only took a nostalgic look back at old photos and memories of the school, but remembered the heritage of the surrounding area.
Current pupils at the school showed off their singing talents with performances of some famous north east songs including the Blaydon Races, but also treated the audience to a piece they had written especially for the anniversary.
The Denbigh Song was a collaboration between the pupils and the Sage in Gateshead and was performed in front of parents and former teachers at the school.
Watching the performance was former teacher Norma Baxter, who taught at the school under the five headteachers who led the school over the 50 years.
She said: "Seeing the girls and boys perform the songs was great because I was really into the musical side of things, so seeing that has been great for me.
"There are hundreds of photos which are triggering off everyone's memories, it's great that the school is celebrating this."
Amongst the celebrations the pupils helped paint a mural in the school which details the time of change in the area over 50 years, showing the changing face of Wallsend including the cranes at the ship yards.
Headteacher Geoff Dignan has worked at the school for 20 years.
He said: "The kids have took to the project really well, and I think it has been great for them to learn about the heritage of the area they are from, and learn not just about all the good times, but the hard times that people have had to live through over the past 50 years."
