Information on decorated soldier sought
AS an ex-soldier of 40 years' service in The Royal Corps of Signals, and on behalf of our Corps Museum at Blandford in Dorse, I am trying to trace the history of a highly decorated Royal Signals soldier who I believe had family in your area.
He was Robert Norman Dodds, MBE, MC, DCM, MM.
Originally Royal Engineers, he was possibly one of the original members of the Royal Signals that formed in 1920.
He started life as a 'Sapper' in 1914 and ended his military career as a major.
We have the London Gazette supplement notices for his awards, and these show that he took part in the First World War, followed by service with the expeditionary force to Russia to support the White Russians in 1919-20.
He then joined up again and served in the Second World War.
I believe that his brother Herbert James Dodds lived in Park Avenue, Whitley Bay, in the 1920s, and that he also started his military career as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, but also finished commissioned as a captain in the Corps of Military Accountants.
Perhaps there are relatives of these soldiers, who have more information. They can contact me on (01480) 392382 or e-mail jjminfiek@ntlworld.com
