Offer of caputred German trophies
TYNEMOUTH County Borough Proceedings of Council dated March 26, 1919 announced the offer to the borough of captured German trophies, including machine guns and grenade launchers.
Also on offer from the National War Savings Association was a decommissioned British tank in recognition of their efforts during the late war. It was resolved that both offers be accepted.
On June 18,1919 The Shields Daily News reported that arrangements had been completed for the official reception of the tank.
At 3 o'clock a procession was to be formed at the Grand Parade bandstand before proceeding to Sharpness Point where the official
presentation was to take place.
On June 23 the ceremony of acceptance was reported. The tank, number 2663, arrived at Tynemouth station on June 21 and was driven to Grand
Parade via Percy Park Road followed by a large crowd.
Several well-known people endured the dubious privilege of riding
inside the furnace-like interior.
Upon arrival at Sharpness Point the tank was manoeuvred onto a prepared position almost opposite the Grand Hotel. The Mayor, Councillor Gregg, addressed the crowd from the top of the tank suggesting that it was not clear as to whether the tank was a reward for the town's good savings work or that the army was pleased to be rid of it.
Proceedings dated September 24 noted the resolution that a field gun be placed on either side of the tank.
By 1923 these patriotic mementoes were seen as eyesores and were removed. The tank was sold for 20.
