Television pair out to let the good times roll

TWO North Tynesiders starring in TV’s latest reality show say they are determined to make the most of it by having a good time.
A good time wasn’t had by all at home watching the first episode of MTV’s Geordie Shore this week, however.
Almost nine in ten of the 70-plus News Guardian readers who responded to our online poll within a couple of hours of its launch on Wednesday denounced the show as an embarrassment to Tyneside.
And thousands more Tynesiders hit out at the series on social network sites, unleashing a barrage of criticism and even calling for it to be axed, after watching the first episode on Tuesday night.
Two of the eight north-easterners featured in the six-episode series, a spin-off of the Us show Jersey Shore, are from North Tyneside.
Vicky Pattison, 23, a call centre worker, is from Wallsend, and Greg Lake, 26, making him the oldest of those taking part, is from Whitley Bay.
Geordie Shore is a fly-on-the-wall show following the exploits of the eight as they share a house in Newcastle city centre and head out for nights out on the town.
Vicky, a former pupil of Wallsend’s Burnside Community College, said: “This all started for me back in November. I had to have screen tests and psychiatric tests, and it was all quite intense.
“We went into the house in April, and it has just been like a whirlwind ever since.
“There are eight young people in the house who are good looking and who like to go out and like to have fun, so we are going to spend our time out in Newcastle and drinking, but that isn’t the only thing that we did.
“We went to the beach in Whitley Bay and had days out.
“It’s about people having fun and showing people what Newcastle is famous for.
“It’s a great city, with friendly people and a slow pace of life.
“We love to go out and have a drink and kick back, and that’s what we are doing.”
Former Whitley Bay High School pupil Greg, a plumber, added: “I did not really like it in the first week, but once we got to know each other we became one big happy family. I love the attention I get now.
“We are real people having a good time, and if people do not like it, then they do not like it.”
Our poll on the News Guardian website asked readers if they considered Geordie Shore an embarrassment, yielding an emphatic response in the affirmative.
At the time of going to print, 64 of those who responded – 88 per cent of the total – said they were embarrassed by the show.
Just five said they weren’t ashamed of it, with a further four not being bothered either way.
