PET owners have been given the opportunity to have their animals micro-chipped in North Shields.
Local RSPCA inspectors, Northumbria Police, Trading Standards and Cats Protection visited the Meadow Well Community Centre last week to offer free chipping, neutering and advice on how to care for pets.

More than 100 animals were chipped as part of the community action event and many pet owners took away vouchers for flea treatments and neutering.

RSPCA inspector Trevor Walker said: "It was extremely positive and well attended.

"When you see a load of white RSPCA vans and police officers you might be a bit suspicious, but when we explained what we were doing people responded well."

RSPCA staff and police also went around the estate knocking on residents' doors offering advice on how best to look after their animals.

"I don't think it's any more of a hotspot than the rest of the north," Mr Walker said.

"The door knock was very good, it's definitely better to offer advice early on and nip problems in the bud rather than have any resulting prosecutions."
