The annual Christmas Memory Tree event, organised by the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund, is taking place at St Peter's Church, in Monkseaton., on Tuesday, December 8, at 7pm.
It is usually held to commemorate those who have suffered from lung diseases but charity founder Chris Knighton wants to open it up to anyone who has lost a loved one because it is such a special time of year.
She said: "Christmas is an emotional time of the year for many and in particular for those who have lost someone close to them.
"This service is an opportunity for people to set aside some time to remember their loved ones and to pay tribute to their life by hanging their memory on the Christmas tree.
"We welcome people from all across the region to this event which we hope will bring some peace and calm during what can be a hectic time of year."
Following the service there will be light refreshments and an opportunity to hang messages on the tree.
