A NORTH Shields social club has been granted an extension to its licence despite concerns about extra noise.
The Terminus Social Club, on Percy Street, applied for an extension for its entertainments licence from 11pm to midnight.

North Tyneside Council's environmental health department objected to the extension on the grounds that extra noise generated by live music would be unacceptable for local residents.

Environmental health officer Frances McClen told North Tyneside Council's licensing sub-committee that they had received a number of complaints over recent years.

She also said that despite efforts to reduce noise "leaking" from the building, noise was still coming from the ventilation system.

"There's a history of complaints in relation to the Terminus Social Club," Ms McClen said.

"Recently, we've had a number of complaints over the Christmas and January periods.

"There have been problems with the current rooms and outbreaks of noise.

"The complaints have been about live music from upstairs in the Terminus Club from events such as weddings."

Clive Wendle, representing the licence holder, told the committee that the number of complaints had dropped off recently.

"We've talked to environmental health and there is no real argument against the application," Mr Wendle said.

He told the committee that club management had taken steps to reduce noise coming from the building, even pulling the metal shutters over the windows when live music was being played.

After deliberations, the committee decided to grant the extension but with conditions attached.

The club must ensure that all windows, doors and fire escapes are all closed when music is being played except in emergencies, that the club's noise limiting system must be in working order and reduce noise to a level decided by environmental health.

Musical entertainment will be restricted to solo artists and karaoke with no dancing taking place after 11pm and no noise should be audible which could cause a nuisance to local residents.
