A MONKSEATON couple, one of whom established a playschool on Earsdon Road, have celebrated their golden wedding.
Richard and Sylvia Harland celebrated their landmark anniversary on April 12 at the Sage in Gateshead.

The couple married when they were 18 in 1958 at the Monkseaton Methodist Chapel and spent their honeymoon on the Northumberland coast.

Sylvia established the Earsdon Road playschool in 1973 which she ran for nine years before the family moved to Lake District in 1986.

Mr Harland worked as an engineer at the shipyards.

The pair purchased the Linnet Hill Hotel in Keswick and ran the establishment for 12 years before their retirement.

Mrs Harland said that lasting so long as a married couple "just happened."

"You've just got to work at it, but the trouble is they don't work at it these days," she said.

Friends and family from across the country, with one guest flying from Russia, attended the special event at the Sage in Gateshead.

They have two daughters and three grandchildren.
