THE dog is no longer man's best friend according to a new poll where more women than men described their canine companions as their best friend, turning the longstanding saying on its head.
The survey, carried out by a pet insurance company, showed that a third of female dog owners named their furry friends as their best friends, with just a fifth of men saying the same.
And a Wallsend-based dog expert agrees.
Annabel Duncan, behavioural expert at Blythman and Partners Veterinary Practice in Wallsend said: "Dogs are naturally very social creatures, much like humans, and they love spending time with their owners as much as their owners enjoy spending time with them.
"To them a family is their pack and therefore they want to play and interact with members of the pack as much as possible.
"Owning a dog or any pet can be very rewarding and you can build a strong bond with them, however, some dogs are more sensitive than others and it may take them longer to learn to trust everyone in the family."
