CULLERCOATS lifeboat was called to aid two surfers who were in difficulty off Tynemouth Long Sands.
The crew of Robert Oliver, Scott Jones, Ben Bradshaw and Robert Ayling were alterted at 7pm on Thursday to the incident.

The Hylton Burdon arrived on scene to find the surfers in difficulties in swells of up to three metres, and occasionally higher.

The surfers were tired but felt they would be able to run inshore when conditions allowed.

The lifeboat stood by, ensuring the safety of the surfers until they attempted to get ashore.

The crew did this by waiting between the surfers and the shoreline so that they would be able to pick them up as they came towards the lifeboat.

This would allow the crew to then drive into the breaking waves and out to sea, rather than be pushed towards the shore, with all the danger of being swamped by the waves in shallow water.

Happily, the surfers were able to get ashore without further incident and the lifeboat returned to its base at Cullercoats.
