DISRUPTION to Metro services is expected to go on throughout the night after copper cable was stolen from the Percy Main station in the early hours of Friday morning.
Replacement bus services have been in operation as the Metro line is closed between North Shields and Chillingham Road in both directions.
Two men have been arrested following the incident, which happened on Friday just after midnight.
A 52-year-old Wallsend man and a 28-year old Newcastle man are helping police with their enquiries.
DCI Ian Bentham of North Shields police said: "It is no great secret that the value of metal in general has gone up.
"We have recovered an identical amount of cable and until it is identified formally we believe it to be the one from the track side."
Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious around the area at the time is asked to contact police in confidence on 03456 043043.
