METRO train services between South Gosforth and Haymarket will be suspended from the start of service until noon on Sunday to allow for essential modernisation work.
Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, will be carrying out important cable installation work on Sunday, February 14.

Passengers travelling on Metro into the centre of Newcastle for the Chinese New Year celebrations at 12pm on Sunday are advised to allow extra time to make their journey.

A bus replacement service, 900, will call at or close to all Metro stations from Regent Centre to Haymarket, via South Gosforth, and service 901 will provide an express service from Regent Centre directly to Haymarket.

Metro has also arranged for trains to operate between Airport and St James, via the coast, using an avoidance line at Metro's Gosforth Depot.

Metro services from Haymarket to South Shields and South Hylton are unaffected.

Nexus rail director Raymond Johnstone said: "We apologise for any disruption this vital modernisation work is going to cause Metro passengers.

"Anyone travelling to Newcastle from the airport or the coast will need to allow extra time to complete the journey.

"There will be two replacement bus services running between Regent Centre and Haymarket.

"Anyone heading into the city to watch the Chinese New Year celebrations at 12pm should get on the 901, which is an express service to Haymarket.

"Passengers travelling on Metro from Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland will not see any disruption."
