TWO Olympic gold medallists will be part of a field of cyclists racing through the borough as the Tour of Britain makes its first visit to the region.
Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas, part of the winning Great Britain team in the team pursuit category, will be joined by bronze medallist Chris Newton and 93 other riders on the 100-mile route from Darlington to NewcastleGateshead – the sixth of the eight stage event.

It is the first time the event has come to the north east, with the stage being held on Friday, September 12.

Competitors will be passing through North Tyneside from 1.20pm onwards.

They will leave Seaton Sluice and head down the A193 into Whitley Bay, riding along the coastline to Tynemouth Priory then onto Tanners Bank in North Shields.

From there they will join the A187 until its junction with the A186 at Neptune Road, where competitors will ride towards the Newcastle side of the Quayside, before crossing for the finishing line at the Baltic.

Riders are expected to leave North Tyneside at about 1.45pm.

Drivers are being warned that the roads could be closed for a short spell either side of when the competitors are due in the borough.

A host of professional teams, all with six riders, are taking part in the event.

Wiggins will be representing Team Columbia, Thomas riding for Barloworld and Newton riding for Rapha-Condor-Recycling.co.uk

Highlights of the event, which takes place between September 7 and 14, will be shown every night on ITV4.
