IN a bid to prevent youngsters from Wallsend becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and crime police officers have teamed up with Positive Futures to work with the kids.
Positive Futures is a Home Office-funded scheme based at Wallsend Boys Club and offers free activities, working with people between the age of 10 and 19 and provides a range of sports and leisure activities specifically selected for that age group.

On Saturday, May 10 officers from Wallsend Neighbourhood Policing Team are accompanying youth workers in the Positive Futures minibus between 6pm and 9pm to seek out youngsters they feel would benefit from the scheme and offer them a chance to get involved.

Wallsend Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Todd said: "Police officers often come across groups of young people hanging around street corners because they say there's nothing else for them to do.

"Some simply drift into underage drinking, and crime and disorder.

"Positive Futures is offering a whole range of fun and free options for young people which we hope youngsters will find enjoyable and help prevent them becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

"We have listened to residents who are concerned about youth disorder in their community and and we want to help stop it occurring by working with partner agencies such as Positive Futures."

Activities include street dance, twilight football, and movie night.

All young people taking part in the activities must get their parents to sign a consent form which is available from Wallsend Boys Club, Station Road.

Alex McGregor, of North Tyneside Positive Futures said: "The North Tyneside Positive Futures Project based at Wallsend Boys Club has a strong relationship with Northumbria Police, particularly the community team at Wallsend Police Station.

"We strive to work closely with the police in our community to help young people on the streets aged 10 to 19.

"We hope to offer them fun activities both sports based and recreational to engage them, keep them safe and occupied in order to ensure they stay out of trouble and out of danger while on the streets.

"We hope young people in the neighbourhood get to know us and the police we work with, and feel happy to approach us at any time."

Activities on offer:

  • Fridays - Street dance at 3.45pm to 4.45pm for 11-12- year-olds and 4.45pm to 5.45pm for 13-14-year-olds at Burnside Business and Enterprise Colllege, St Peters Road Wallsend. Football for 11-16-year-olds will take place outside the college from 3.45pm to 5.45pm
