WORK has begun on a £1m scheme to create new affordable housing in Longbenton.
Social housing providers NomadE5 is working in partnership with North Tyneside Council to construct eight two-bedroom bungalows at Monks Park Way.

The new developments – set to be complete in February, 2009 – will assist in re-housing older reside
nts from existing sheltered housing schemes, which are set to be refurbished or re-built as part of ambitious regeneration proposals.

Mayor John Harrison, Coun Jim Allan, NomadE5 chairman Roy Ashton and NomadE5 managing director Alison Stanners were all present at the sod-cutting ceremony last Thursday.

Alison said: "The many thousands of people currently on our waiting lists demonstrate the need for more affordable homes of a high quality.

"We are committed to increasing availability of these homes through schemes such as this one."

The Monks Park Way development is one of a series of NomadE5 schemes planned for North Tyneside.

Other schemes include – ten single person flats; nine two-bed houses for rent; 23 rentable flats for older people; three two-bed houses for shared ownership; 12 bungalows for rent; and four shared ownership properties for people with learning disabilities.

Mr Harrison said: "We welcome this scheme as we're committed to ensuring older people in North Tyneside have flexible high quality accommodation that meet their needs. It means that people are able to retain their independence and live in their own home for longer, which is one of our key priorities."
