FOUR yachtsmen were rescued when their vessel suffered mechanical difficulties one mile off Cullercoats.
Tynemouth RNLI's all-weather lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland was launched at 7.21pm on Monday after the skipper of the Hartlepool-based 36ft yacht Lust for Life and his three crewmen became stranded, radioing the coastguard for help.

Reaching the stricken yacht just a few minutes after being launched, the volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew towed the vessel swiftly to safety at Royal Quays Marina.

Adrian Don, spokesman for Tynemouth RNLI, said: "The Lust for Life had earlier sailed from Hartlepool and was returning when she suffered a breakdown.

"And although the yacht and her crew were in no immediate danger, any broken down boat needs to be rescued as soon as possible to ensure that a dangerous situation doesn't eventually develop.

"The RNLI is constantly at readiness to go to the assistance of anyone in any difficulty at sea, no matter what the circumstances."
