PUPILS at a school have taken part in a record-breaking event to help highlight the dangers of speeding and the benefits of walking.
Whitehouse Primary School, in North Shields, joined hundreds of other schools nationwide to participate in a record breaking walking bus on Wednesday.
The aim was to get more than 100,000 children across the country, walking in a crocodile of twos, on a 500-metre 'safe route', at exactly the same time.
Youngsters at the school set off at 10am holding hands to walk along Devon Road, past North Tyneside General Hospital, by Preston Grange and back to the school.
They were joined on the route by neighbourhood wardens and parents, all in high visibility jackets.
Every 20 minutes, a child is hurt or killed on foot in the UK, most on the way to or from school.
A total of 40 per cent of pupils are now driven to school meaning more traffic danger and potential for obesity, council officials claim.
