A Whitley Bay playwright has made history with the first play to be funded by an online currency called bitcoin.
Alex Oates wrote Silk Road, based on his experiences of growing up in Whitley Bay, and follows the story about the online marketplace that makes it possible to buy illegal drugs online.
The play is being performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer.
Alex, who attended Whitley Bay High School, said: “It is based on my experiences of growing up in Whitley Bay and working as a DJ in the now-closed-down Shaggy’s bar on South Parade.
“I moved to London in 2007 and have been carving a career as a writer working on Eastenders E20 and writing for the Old Vic New Voices.
“The play is unusual in the sense that we are accepting donations in bitcoin, the cryptocurrency, and have received 2btc (around £800) as a donation.”
Silk Road will be at Assembly George Studio Four at 1.25pm during the festival.
