Comic is set to open club

A WHITLEY Bay comedian will be performing at the opening night of TV presenter Gail Porter’s new comedy club this weekend.

Ian Gordon, 26, has been performing comedy for six years and presenting full time for the past two years.

Originally from Whitley Bay, but now living in Seghill, Ian responded to Gail Porter’s twitter update about new comedy acts and was delighted when he was offered a spot at the show in Hamsptead this Saturday.

Ian will be performing as Fernando, a lothario who has been a hit at recent events in the region, alongside established acts including Jeff Leach and Stephen Bailey.

“I made my debut as Fernando at Pink Lane Poetry and Performance in October and received a great reaction from the crowd. I’ve since produced a Christmas parody video and performed at JibbaJabba in Newcastle, ahead of more gigs throughout February and March,” he said.

As well as this new solo venture, Ian is also part of On The Spot and Matt and Ian, both improvised comedy groups. As part of Matt and Ian, Ian performed for 18 nights at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year, and is hoping to return this August.

“Going to the Fringe has just inspired me to be more creative and keep trying as many things out as possible,” he added.

“I wouldn’t have had the confidence to approach Gail about this gig without the experience that the Fringe gave me.”

Gail said: “There is so much reality TV at the moment, meaning new talent is being ignored.

“I want to see really talented people getting recognised for their performing skills and not just because they were on a reality TV show.”

The show takes place at The Duke of Hamilton, this Saturday at 8pm.
