Course to train coaches of the future

A NEW apprenticeship course is being started to help the sports coaches of the future.

TyneMet College has seen an influx in applications ‘Sports Activity Leadership Apprenticeship’ with a second batch waiting for their start date.

Apprentices are taught how to prepare sessions and lead and coach people in an activity, making sure the working environment is healthy and safe, while other topics are also covered.

TyneMet have been working with various employers to deliver the course and also have links with local sports clubs including Newcastle Eagles – who have taken on three apprentices in the last year – and Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club.

Paul Hetherington, of the real tennis club, said: “Real Tennis is a unique sport, in the past it has been difficult for us to recruit coaches who have sufficient knowledge of the sport.

“After talking to TyneMet College we decided that the apprenticeship course would be the ideal course for this new person to enrol on.”

For more information on the course contact Pat Blyth on (0191) 229 5172 or email pat.blyth@tynemet.ac.uk
