First taste of 3D wows audience at Odeon Silverlink

THE first 3D screen in the region was packed to the rafters as people flocked to see the first film in all it's 3D glory.

And the 3D element was no dissapointment.

My Bloody Valentine was the first film to be shown in 3D at the new screen at Odeon Silverlink, and I think it is fair to say it would not have been such a full showing had it not been for the curiosity surrounding the new technology.

No one was really there to see the film - they were there to experience the thrill of 3D realism, with the futuristic specs and in-you-face realism it offers.

My Bloody Valentine is a remake of the 1981 Canadian slasher film, that tells the story of a cave in of a mine that trapped six miners.

When rescue teams arrived to save them, five of the miners had been killed by a pickaxe - and the miner who did it, Harry Warden, is in a coma.

Eleven years later (on Valentine's Day), Warden wakes from his coma and escapes the hospital, brutally killing anyone who stands in his path.

He returns to the abandoned mineshaft to a party of teenagers where Axel (Kerr Smith), his girlfriend Irene (Betsy Rue), Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles), and his girlfriend Sarah (Jaime King) are partying.

Suddenly, Harry Warden returns and continues his horrific killing spree, injuring Tom Hanniger and brutally murdering several others - but he is shot by police and runs back into the mine.

Ten years later Tom's dad dies and he inherits the mine, and returns to sell it. But it seems Warden has returned to finish off what he started - in typically brutal fashion.

Tree branches, rifles, and pickaxes jump off the screen towards you as the film progresses in a way that simply wouldn't work if it didn't have the element of horror to make you feel as if things really are coming towards you - and in this film you often feel as if the pickaxe narrowly misses you.

Incredibly gory, but also laugh-out-loud funny (perhaps not always intentionally), this film provides the perfect entry into the world of 3D.

With more films planned at the new screen in the near future, the new technology looks set to become a firm favourite with audiences.
