Sheen shines as opinionated football manager Clough

THE Damned United tells the controversial story of Brian Clough's doomed time as manager of Leeds United.

From the best-selling novel by David Peace, The Damned United stars the amazing Michael Sheen as the opinionated football manager as he struggles with his 44-day tenure at the club in the 60s and 70s.

Even as a non football fan I was interested to learn about Clough's triumphs at Derby when they became league champions in 1973, and how his talent and drive got him where it did. Even if he did lose more than a few friends along the way.

We follow Clough as he takes over Leeds United from the powerful manager Don Revie, who is adored by his players, and the chaotic events that follow.

The first time he meets the Leeds players he tells them their trophies mean nothing because they have all been won through cheating - doesn't start things off well for him, and it is all downhill from there.

It's a pretty simple story in that it follows Clough through the ups and downs of career leading up to Leeds and at Leeds - but it is still makes for interesting and intriguing viewing.

Michael Sheen is a legend in the making - his ability to take on a role like Tony Blair, David Frost and Brian Clough and make you believe he really is that person is incredible.

But he's also a talented footballer.

Other acting gems come in the form of Jim Broadbent as Derby chairman Sam Longson, Timothy Spall as Clough's right hand man Peter Taylor, and Colm Meaney as Don Revie.

The Damned United is a film that football fans and non football fans alike will enjoy.

It is funny, and clever, and makes for a great film.

And when Revie fails in his attempt at England manager, you can't help but smile.
