Superhero movie
THROUGH the recent surge of genre spoofs comes one that brings more than a stream of poor jokes and an even poorer script.
After the dismal Meet the Spartans, I wasn't sure what to expect from Superhero Movie, but this is without doubt far more witty and entertaining than Spartans, with a hint of Scary Movie from the good days.
Nerd Rick Riker (Drake Bell) is in love with Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton), but the two can't seem to get it together.
At a school field trip to a local science lab, Rick is bitten by a radioactive dragonfly and soon develops superpowers and becomes The Dragonfly.
Meanwhile evil Lou Landers (Christopher McDonald) is dying and is after a treatment to cure him, which, true to form, backfires turning him into a monster that drains the life from its victims in order to survive.
Of course the ensuing battle of good and evil, and of course of Rick's journey to get the girl, is actually really entertaining with some quality laugh out loud moments along the way.
It offers the first coherent storyline since Scary Movie, probably for sticking very closely to the Spiderman storyline, as well as throwing in X Men and Batman references in for good measure.
Leslie Nielsen can still manage his Naked Gun style slapstick he's best known for, and Pamela Anderson does what she does best - despite having no real purpose for being in the film apart from being the eye candy.
Superhero Movie is not for those who want to be intellectually stimulated, but it is a lighthearted foray into the spoof genre, and is far more sensical and entertaining than Meet The Spartans.
