Katherine Jenkins wows at Newcastle arena

I HAVE never seen opera sang live until Katherine Jenkins came to Newcastle at the weekend.

I'll be honest - the real reason I went was for support group Escala.

The classical quartet that found fame on Britain's Got Talent are absolutely incredible, and they were the reason I found myself at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena on Saturday.

But they weren't the reason that thousands of opera fans had packed into the arena - it was opera star Katherine Jenkins that everyone else was there to see, and despite having never seen anyone sing opera live, I found myself deeply moved by several of the numbers she sang.

Katherine Jenkins' tour is spectacular in that she dances, duets, flies, and yes, even sings.

There is no denying that she has an incredible voice, and has an amazing ability to switch effortlessly between classic opera songs and modern classics.

Opera fans in the audience marvelled at the wonderful Parla Piu Piano from The Godfather and Habanera and Seguidilla from Carmen, but for me it was her versions of contemporary songs that interested me the most.

Katherine Jenkins has a desire to please everyone, and when she sang one of my favour songs, Sarah McLachlan's In The Arms Of The Angel, as she carried out a range of breathtaking acrobatics, I was completely in awe of her.

Again when she sang a totally different version of Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry, it was so far removed from the original it was a joy to listen to.

I was more than pleasantly surprised by Katherine Jenkins' tour - it had singing, dancing, acrobatics - it had something for everyone and the standing ovation at the end showed was more than deserved.
