At the centre of this extended family photograph, dated around 1900, are James and Jane Eskdale.

The couple married in 1870 and had eight daughters and two sons, although their youngest, Georgina, died aged six only a few years before this picture.

The eldest daughters, Hannah and Jane Anne, are sitting with infants on their laps to the right. Frances is behind James’ left shoulder, and Jonathan is kneeling in front of his parents. To the left of Jane are Lily, Ellen, Mary, and Isabella, with Harold second-left in the back.

The 1901 census lists James, Jane, and five children living at 32 Percy Avenue, Cullercoats.
