TOP composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has sent his congratulations to a borough opera society for reaching their 100th birthday.
Whitley Bay Operatic Society first began rehearsals for their very first production Trial by Jury in the summer of 1911, and are only one of a handful of theatre companies to reach this historic achievement in the country.
Lord Webber, who is known for writing hit musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Cats, who is currently the patron of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, wrote to the society to congratulate them on this success and to wish them all the best for the next 100 years.
Society chairman Stephen Mason said: “It is quite an achievement really, Whitley Op’s have been such a big part of the community for such a long time and they have brought joy and entertainment to thousands of people of the last century.”
The society are currently well underway with rehearsals for their next show, the timeless classic favourite “Carousel” which is running at the Playhouse Whitley Bay from Wednesday, November 9, to Saturday, November 12.
Tickets priced at £14, or £10 concessions are available by calling the box office on 0844 2772771.
