A PAINTING recalling North Tyneside’s fishing heritage was sold for almost £3,000 at auction last week.

Waiting for the Boats, by Cullercoats artist Henry Hetherington Emmerson, was sold by Anderson and Garland in Newcastle.

The oil painting, produced in 1870, went for £2,700, well below its estimate of between £4,000 and £7,000.

One of the sitters it features is fishwife Polly Donkin, used as a subject by many artists and photographers in North Tyneside at the time.

Photographs of her can be seen at Newcastle and North Shields libraries.
