Perhaps the darkest of musicals, the Blood Brothers brought the audience at the Sunderland Empire to its feet on Monday night with a well deserved standing ovation.

The show, which deals with class issues as well as the nature vs nurture debate, really takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as you follow the story of twins Micky and Eddie, who are separated at birth and go on to lead very different lives.

The very nature of Micky’s character calls for exceptional talent, and that was not in short supply, and the progression of his character was played out perfectly by Sean Jones.

But it was Maureen Nolan as matriarch Mrs Johnstone who really stole the show with an incredible voice – and the truly moving Tell Me It’s Not True that resulted in a prolonged and heart-felt standing ovation.

Blood Brothers is on at the Sunderland Empire until Saturday.
