Take a look at mysterious treasure from 200 years ago

The mysterious Roman treasure that was unearthed in Backworth nearly 200 years ago continues to be a top visitor attraction at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend where it is on display until Sunday.

The Backworth Hoard, on loan from the British Museum as part of the British Museum Spotlight loans and tours programme, is back on Tyneside for the first time since 1850.

The Backworth Hoard is of national significance, featuring gold and silver artefacts including a silver pan, spoons and gilded silver brooches that were believed to be treasure deposits from a pagan shrine dedicated to the Mother- goddesses near the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall.
