EXTRAS are needed for a play being staged in North Shields this summer about a mining disaster 150 years ago in south east Northumberland.

North Tyneside Community Theatre will be performing Hester, a play about the 1862 Hartley Colliery Disaster, in July.

The Backworth Colliery Band will be providing a soundtrack to the show, and the theatre company is calling on others to get involved too.

It is inviting volunteers keen on a role as an extra along to two open nights it is holding at John Spence High School in North Shields next week.

The open nights will take place on Monday and Wednesday, both starting at 7pm.

No acting experience is necessary for those wanting non-speaking parts as pit workers aged ten to 70 or their wives.
