NEWCASTLE United are said to have been quoted a sensational £17m for powerful St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
The People newspaper reports Toon owner Mike Ashley's scouting team think he is the answer to their prayers, but United's initial offer of £9m is around half of what Les Verts want for their homegrown star, dubbed the new Didier Drogba.

Bolton boss Gary Megson is also hot on the trail of Gomis, with around £8m to spend as he seeks a replacement for Nicolas Anelka, but Wanderers will not meet the asking price.

St Etienne's best hope of getting the fee is off a top Spanish or Italian side.

Meanwhile The People also claim Newcastle are weighing up a surprise bid to bring Edgar Davids back to the Premier League.

It is said the former Tottenham midfielder will put on hold a move to Qatar if he can agree terms. It would mean a pay-as-you- play deal for the 35-year-old.
