A fundraising shanty night at Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade’s Spanish Battery headquarters raised £1,121 for new training equipment.

The event was held by Tynemouth Rotary Club.

Its president Archie McGlynn said: “The brigade does sterling work throughout the year and in all kinds of weather, and we are very pleased to be able to assist it in having the best equipment available for these rescues.

“Over the years, we have presented the brigade with in excess of £20,000, and the shanty night is one of our most popular events.”

The brigade has spent its latest donation on a water rescue mannequin.

Captain Dave Bell said: “It perfectly simulates unconscious casualties in the water.”
