13 metal gully covers stolen in just one night

THIEVES have stolen 13 metal gully covers from streets in North Sields.

The thieves are believed to have struck overnight on Wednesday, October 5.

Gully covers were stolen from Stannington Road, Balkwell Avenue, Tosson Place, Fallodon Road, Alnwick Avenue and the junction of Beadnell Avenue and Biddlestone Crescent.

Inspector Geoff Cross, of the North Shields neighbourhood policing team, said: “We’re appealing for help from the public to catch those responsible for these crimes.

“We’d also ask people to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or unusual metallic-type noises.

“We are particularly concerned as this type of theft puts people at risk of injury, if a motorcyclist or cyclist was to have a crash as a result of a missing gully cover, or indeed a pedestrian were to be injured.

“We want to catch those responsible.”

Any potential witnesses are asked to contact police on 03456 043043 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
