WORK is under way to repair hundreds of gutters damaged by the winter’s extreme weather.
No fewer than 1,890 gutters on North Tyneside Council properties were left damaged between last November and January, mostly due to the weight of snowfall.
The council is allocating £140,000 towards tackling the repairs so they can be completed as soon as possible.
The work is being carried out on the council’s behalf by Kier North Tyneside.
Coun John Goodfellow, the authority’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The period of exceptionally bad weather caused significant damage to hundreds of gutters.
“I would like to reassure our tenants that we’re aware of the issue and are determined that the repairs are completed as quickly as possible.
“That’s why we’re providing extra funding so that additional resources can be used to tackle the problem.”
The extent of the works required means that it will take several weeks to fix all 1,890 gutters damaged by snow and ice.
Any work that is required for health and safety reasons has already been prioritised and completed.
