DISABLED people across the borough will have more opportunities to get involved in sport after North Tyneside Council was awarded more than 200,000 in funding.

The cash, from Sport England’s Inclusive Sport fund, will enable the local authority to recruit new staff to extend its existing disability programme as well as purchase new equipment to help more disabled people take part.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who served on the awards panel, said: “This funding will go a long way to helping those inspired by the outstanding performances of our Paralympians this summer to get out and try sport for themselves.

“It’s fantastic to see such a wide range of organisations benefitting – all of them focused on helping more disabled people to discover how much sport has to offer.”

Coun George Westwater, North Tyneside Council’s cabinet member for community and regulatory services, said: “This is fantastic news for disabled people across North Tyneside.”
