WALLSEND is one of the region’s biggest blackspots for TV licence dodging, latest figures reveal.
More than 230 people in the town were caught watching television without a licence during the first six months of this year.
They join almost 197,000 people across the UK caught watching TV illegally.
TV Licensing spokesman Tim Downs said: “While the vast majority of people in the UK pay their licence fee, to be fair to those who pay, we have to be firm to those who try and get away without paying.
“We take TV licence evasion very seriously, and we will not hesitate to prosecute if people continue to break the law.”
Anyone watching television illegally risks prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
