SARA’S Hope Foundation has been given a £3,000 boost by the Law Society.
Mark Hipkin, the society’s Newcastle branch president, handed over a cheque for £3,319 to Ged and Julie Hoburn, founders of the Whitley Bay charity.
The money was raised by two functions held by the society.
Mark chose Sara’s Hope Foundation to benefit from the society’s annual fundraising drive after hearing how Sara Hoburn lost a two-year battle with a rare form of colon cancer at the age of 16 in 2001.
Sara’s dream was to help other sick children to lead normal family lives away from the hospital environment, inspiring the creation of the charity.
It opened a holiday retreat in Crete in the summer to offer a respite for children and young people with cancer and their families.
Ged said: “Sara’s Retreat is a fantastic resource for families which allows them to enjoy time on their own and relax in a purpose-built villa without the hassle of arranging the holiday, flights and accommodation, with no cost to them”.
So far, eight children living with cancer and their families have visited Sara’s Retreat.
