A borough church saw a world record broken during a fundraising event which raised £2,000.
The Whitley Bay Baptist Church in Park Avenue held a ‘Smartie Party’ in aid of the Tear Fund.
And during the course of the event, Kathryn Ratcliffe broke the world record for the number of Smarties to be eaten using chopsticks in three minutes – an astonishing 175.
Some of the money was raised by children aged between three and seven who filled empty Smartie tubes with loose change in exchange for a full tube of the sweets.
All the food at the event was Smartie themed with manufacturer Nestle donating sweets.
The Tear Fund helps children who live in the poorest countries of the world.
There was also a short talk on the Tear Fund’s work.
