A killer from North Shields who absconded prison has been detained.

Michael Robson was jailed in 1996 for the murder of Robert Williamson following an incident on the Meadowell estate, although his conviction was reduced to manslaughter on appeal in 2006.

Robson, 44, from North Shields, absconded from an open prison in Doncaster where he is service a sentece for manslaugter, sparking a man hunt.

But South Yorkshire Police have confirmed the 44-year-old has been detained in custody.

Robson left Hatfield Prison on Thursday, July 16, and was detained by police in West Yorkshire this afternoon (Sunday, July 19).
