THOUSANDS of pounds have been donated to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation following the success of two bank accounts.

Two accounts – an ISA and a Saver – set up in the foundation’s name by Newcastle Building Society has helped attract millions of pounds worth of investment from members.

The products pledge to give a cash donation to the foundation for every pound invested by its customers.

As a result of their popularity, the charity is on target to receive around a £50,000 donation from the society – the first quarterly instalment being £12,000.

The first instalment was presented to Lady Elsie Robson by the building society’s chief executive Jim Willens.

Lady Elsie said: “I’m extremely grateful to the Newcastle Building Society and its members for their wonderful support.

“I’m always especially touched to receive support from local people and organisations and it was a great pleasure showing Jim around the Sir Bobby Robson Centre and introducing him to the wonderful medical team who staff it.”

Mr Willens said: “We thought long and hard about what charity we could support and the natural choice seemed the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation as it has its roots in the north east it fits with our regional heritage perfectly.

“The money raised so far is a great achievement and one we hope will make a difference to the charity and in consequence many people’s lives.”
