A soldier got the seal of approval when he decided to propose to his girlfriend at an aquarium.

Alan Fairbairn, 22, from Blyth, decided to pop the question to Leanne White, 21, during a visit to Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium and enlisted the help of aquarists to ensure it went smoothly.

He decided to propose during the aquarium’s outdoor seal show in front of a crowd of unsuspecting visitors.

Blue Reef’s Anna Etchells said: “It’s always a bit nerve-wracking when you get asked to help out with these life-changing experiences but we were really honoured.

“After the seal show our aquarist announced someone had something to say.

“Alan talked to Leanne, in front of the crowd, saying she was the one person he couldn’t live without. He went down on one knee, and asked her to marry him.”

Alan decided to propose to Leanne now as he is about to leave on a tour of duty.

“I was a bit nervous but it went perfectly, she was really surprised, even though I think she might have thought something was going on,” he said.

The proposal was sealed with a kiss for Leanne from Lucy, one of the aquarium’s resident California sea lions.
