A NORTH Tyneside optician has been helping leave a legacy of better eyesight in Africa.
Alan Bartholomew, an optician at Specsavers in North Shields, visited Ghana with the charity Vision Aid Overseas, as part of a team training 20 local students as optometrists.
Alan and his team also set up a clinic in a disadvantaged area of the capital city of Accra, for the students to provide eyecare to people otherwise unable to afford it.
Alan said: “I feel very proud that I have been able to pass my knowledge on to another culture where it will be used to help people on a daily basis.
“Now the students we trained up will be able to provide eyecare for local people.
“I was able to take a box of sunglasses from the store in North Shields to Ghana. These were the only sunglasses the team had to hand out, and they went like gold-dust.”
