A youngster’s pedal power has raised almost £300 for charity.

Alexander Sisterson cycled almost seven miles from his home village of Cullercoats to St Mary’s Island and back to raise cash for an African village.

The five-year-old, a pupil at the King’s School in Tynemouth, was joined by mum Helen, dad Paul, brother James, two, and grandad Ken Duffy, 68.

Helen said: “Alexander decided to do the bike ride after seeing one of the appeals on the TV .

“His initial plan was to collect all the rain water and run a large water pipe through to Africa but I thought the cycle was more straight forward.

“It was great fun and Alexander is so proud of what he has achieved.

“We want to thank everyone who donated.”
