A career opportunity snapped up by a North Tyneside teenager is the wheel deal.

Thomas Shannon, of Wallsend, has landed a four-year engineering apprenticeship with a national bus firm.

The 17-year-old is working for Stagecoach North East at its Walkergate depot in Newcastle and also studying at college in Glasgow for six one-week blocks a year for a technical certificate in bus and coach engineering maintenance.

He will be taught all aspects of vehicle maintenance, including preparing buses for the road, conducting MoTs and making repairs.

Prior to joining the transport firm, Thomas was studying graphic design at St Thomas More RC Academy in North Shields.

“Although I liked graphic design, I’d like to develop my mechanical skills, and I think the apprenticeship will suit me really well as I also enjoy problem-solving and learning new techniques,” he said.

“Already I have started working on buses, and it’s great.”
