AN ap-peal is going out for bell-ringers to help kick-start this year’s Olympic Games.

Plans are being drawn up to have bells ringing across the country to mark the start of the games in London on Friday, July 27, at 8am.

However, the timing of the launch means that many of North Tyneside’s regular bell-ringers will either be at work or commuting.

To overcome that problem, Christ Church in North Shields is calling for new recruits to learn the ropes ready for the summer.

Michael Scott, Ringing Master at the Preston Road church, said: “There is still time to train ringers in the basics before July, and members of Christ Church, together with ringers in towers all over the north east, are looking for volunteers to come forward as soon as possible.

“Bell-ringing is excellent physical and mental exercise but does involve a commitment to practise regularly every week.”

Practice at the church takes place on Tuesdays from 7.30pm until 9pm.
