I have been following the story of the Whitley Bay balustrades with interest as in the late 1950s, probably 1958-59, my father’s building company replaced all the balustrades everyone is talking about.
Where they got the dates of the 1930s from, I have no idea.
Also replaced were some, if not all, of the support beams across the font of the shops. I still have a spare balustrade from this work in my garden at Earsdon.
My father’s building company was called Charles F Thompson Builders Ltd, and he was a founding member of the Tynemouth branch of the Master Builders’ Federation.
