Beaches earn more awards from visitors

More international awards have been presented to beaches in the borough.

Whitley Bay beach and Tynemouth Long Sands have both been awarded the Certificate of Excellence 2015 by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site.

They are now included on the company’s website alongside fabulous hotels, Michelin star restaurants and internationally-renowned parks, museums and beaches.

The news comes after the pair, along with King Edward’s Bay, were awarded Blue Flags as well as a Seaside Award, alongside Cullercoats Bay.

Coun John Stirling, cabinet member for the environment, said: “I’m absolutely delighted – but not at all surprised – that visitors from all over the world flock to our beaches and then take the time to write such excellent reviews.

“We are immensely proud of our stunning coastline which is enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year and attracts tourism worth £243m to our local economy.

“The council spends a lot of time caring for its beaches making sure they are safe and clean. We are also investing heavily in the regeneration of Whitley Bay seafront to make it a truly fantastic visitor attraction.”
