BEES: Impossible to replace

editorial image

Did you notice the small numbers of bumble bees and honey bees in the garden last year?

Despite increasingly planting and sowing bee-friendly plants, I believe the effects of farming insecticide usage has markedly decreased my garden bee population, and if this is reflected nationwide there will be catastrophic effects on agriculture. Soft fruit does not pollinate itself, nor a significant number of flowering plants, both wild and cultivated.

I have already written to MP Alan Campbell, who is sympathetic, but we must pressure Liz Truss, minister at DEFRA, to refuse to allow the further use of neonicotinoids, which are banned in most of Europe and should be in the UK.

If we lose bees they may be hard, if not impossible, to replace.
