Dedicated blood donors from Whitley Bay have been recognised for helping save lives.
The donors were honoured at an awards event held by NHS Blood and Transplant at Beamish Hall Hotel.
Three donors from Whitely Bay, Jennifer May, Robert Preston and Patricia Heppenstall, were all awarded joined by others from across the north east with a total of 45 donors receiving crystal awards.
Guest speaker, Joanne Liddle, spoke about her need for blood after her daughter suffered after birth with vomiting and bleeding and a platelet transfusion saved her life.
She said: “I’ll be forever grateful to that special someone who took the time out to donate. Without them, my daughter may not be alive.”
Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.
