A COUPLE from Wallsend have been celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.

Bob Abernethy first set eyes on Cathie in 1940 when they both attended a local dance near Troon, Scotland, where he served in the army.

The couple were married then two years later.

Bob was posted to India in 1945 and when he returned the following year he set up home with Cathie in Howdon.

Bob went on to work as a pattern maker for 30 years before he retired.

The couple have two children, Kathleen and Brian, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Cathie, 90, lives in Savory Road, Wallsend, while Bob, 92, has been a resident at the nearby Walldene Court Care Home in Threap Gardens, Rosehill, since 2006.

They celebrated their special anniversary day at a party with family and friends held at the care home.
